Keith J. Burton(a.k.a. "Mr. B.")
Keith J. Burton is currently in his 14th year as Music Director at B. H. Hamblen Elementary School. He was born March 6, 1969 in San Antonio, Texas. He was educated in the public schools of the Northside Independent School District, attending J. B. Passmore Elementary School, Anson Jones Middle School and John Jay High School. While at Jay, he was a four-year member of the Mustang Choir, under the direction of Irma Taute. He experienced great success as a singer, earning back-to-back placements in the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Choir in 1986 and 1987. He graduated from Jay in May of 1987 in the top 10% of his class. From there he had a brief enrollment at Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the University's famed "Singing Cadets" male chorus. After a semester at TAMU, Keith returned to San Antonio and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served 7 months in the Reserve at Kelly AFB in San Antonio and 3 1/2 years in the Active Duty Air Force at Bergstrom AFB in Austin. After separating from the Air Force, Keith enrolled at Southwest Texas State University(now Texas State University-San Marcos) where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, graduating cum laude in December 1996. After graduation, Keith moved to Houston to begin his career as a teacher. He previously taught in the New Caney, LaMarque, Waller, Hempstead and Houston School Districts before assuming his current position at Hamblen in August of 2004. As Music Director, Keith teaches General Music classes to all students in grades K-5. He is also the director of the Melodymakers, Hamblen's after-school choir consisting of 40 students in grades 4-5, chosen by audition every September. Keith loves working at Hamblen and teaching the joys of music to his students, who affectionately call him "Mr. B."
In addition to teaching music, Keith loves to sing. He has sung with the Houston Symphony Chorus, the Houston Chamber Choir and the Houston Tidelanders, an award-winning barbershop harmony chorus of some 150 members that presents several shows a year and competes against other choruses from around the world in the Barbershop Harmony Society(BHS).
On a personal note, Keith has been married to his wife, Tracey Lanett Burton(nee' Ford) since February 14, 2015. Tracey is the love of his life and the joy of his heart. He is an Associate Minister at Clubcreek New Life Community Baptist Church in Houston, where he serves as a teacher in the church's Youth Spiritual Development Ministry, a member of the church's Sanctuary Choir, Director of the Clubcreek Youth Choir and Superinendent of the Church's Sunday School.
