Elementary TestingStudents required to take the STAAR Assessments
Elementary students in grades 3 and above are required to take grade level specific STAAR Asssessments.STAAR 3 – 5 Assessments
Grade 3 — Reading and Math
Grade 4 — Reading, Math and Writing
Grade 5 — Reading, Math and ScienceEvery question that appears on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) is grounded in the knowledge and skills statements and student expectations within the state-mandated curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Please note that every year the STAAR tests may represent varying combinations of TEKS student expectations.
Once students have taken a STAAR assessment they will receive a score indicating their performance.
TEA established a four (4) hour time limit for STAAR grades 3 through 8 assessments. TEA notes that a four hour time limit should provide sufficient time for the majority of students to complete the test. The rationale for time limits aligns Texas testing practices with other timed state and national assessments, i.e. SAT, ACT and AP examinations. Extended time accommodations for students with unique learning needs will continue to be offered.
Impact on Grade Advancement:
The Student Success Initiative (SSI) requires that students in grades 5 and 8 pass the STAAR reading exam to be promoted to the next grade. Students will test in March. Any student who needs to retest will be tested in May. Summer testing will be provided in June with a 3rd opportunity to pass the STAAR 5th and 8th grade reading exam.Grade Advancement
The Student Success Initiative requires that students in grade 5 pass both the reading and math exams to be promoted to the next grade. Retesting opportunities are available in May and June if necessary.Released Tests (each link opens a PDF)
