There are many varying opinions regarding social media. Without a doubt, our students are digital natives and it can be difficult to navigate the issues which arise in the social media context.
Social Media Effects
Studies continue to show there are positive and negative effects of social media.
Some of the positive effects are communication with their peers, typically a sense of community and belonging, and allowing students to have a voice.
Some of the negative effects include students being more distracted, procrastinating, opening their lives up to the public, and posting things to impress their peers.
What can parents do to help?
1. Encourage self-care and offline activities.
2. Help students keep perspective and talk about their feelings.
3. Let them know you are there for them.
4. Get help when you or they need it.
