    Biology is the study of living things, how they work, what they are made of, what they need, and how they interact. During the school year, students will study the following concepts: Ecology, Biomolecules, Plant and Animal Cells, Homeostasis and the Plasma Membrane, Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration, DNA---àProtein Synthesis, Mitosis and Meiosis, Genetics, Evolution, Classification, Six Kingdoms of Life, Human Body Systems, and Comparative Anatomy (dissections).

    Course Objectives:

    Ø  Learn basic biological information necessary to appreciate your position in nature fully.

    Ø  Discover; verify change and relationships by themselves.

    Ø  Develop and practice lab skills such as inquiry, forming hypotheses, exploration, collecting, organizing and analyzing data, discussions and sources of error, ways to improve experimental techniques thru scientific investigations.

    Ø  Prepare to be successful on End of Course (STARR).


    Class Expectations:

    Ø  Come with a POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

    Ø  Be in Dress code; no baggy pants, ID Badges, clean shaven and no exposed middriffs.

    Ø  Be on TIME, READY and PREPARED to learn.

    Ø  Take Responsibility for your own learning

    Ø  Respect one another, take responsibility for yourself, your actions and your mistakes.

    Ø  You must participate and contribute to the daily discussions; it is required that you do so.

    Ø  Xtra credit does not exist in this class but you are allowed to earn bonus points.

    Ø  Homework is every night (Read, review and be prepared for the next class meeting).

    Ø  Electronic devices are not allowed.

    Ø  Safe laboratory practices are required at all times.




    Major Grades = 35%: Test, Projects, Labs

    Daily Grades = 50%: Handouts & Quizzes

    Six Weeks Test = 15%: End of Six Weeks Test

    (85% or higher avg = no hw; but bonus pts)

    Absences:  Attendance is mandatory!! Absences do not excuse you from the assigned work. It is your responsibility to make arrangements before the absence or meet with your instructor and/ or your designated peer to receive the missed notes, handouts, or any other materials.  Missed test, labs and quizzes, students must set an appointment to make up the work.


    Academic Integrity Individual work is to be done by the student and for the student.  Cheating, copying another person’s work and plagiarizing will only result in a failing grade of a “ZERO” for that assignment/test and a parent contact.  It is important not to cheat yourself of learning what is important for you to be successful in this class.

    Adaptation Passes are an incentive to assist students with being successful in the biology class.  These passes allow students to turn in an assignment 1 day late without any penalty, use as a restroom pass or even redeem at the end of the six weeks for bonus points towards their final grade.  Each student will be given two per six weeks and each pass is worth ¼ of a point.


    Digital Photography:  All students will take pictures, videos of lab and other activities as part of an ongoing “Extremely Vocabulary” project.  Additionally, this is another division of Science Fair that students will participate.


    Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and can lead to a lower overall average in the class. Remember, “the teacher dismisses the class and not the bell”(This includes leaving class early or packing up before being dismissed.)


    Labs:  Students can expect to be in labs at any time for part or all of the class period.  Safety rules pertaining to the wear of goggles, safety aprons, etc will be in effect at all times. No student will be allowed to use the lab until they have scored a 100% on the lab safety and hazardous materials test.  Any student found to be conducting themselves in an unsafe manner will be removed from the lab and given a grade of zero for the lab.


    Latework will not be accepted for any assignments, it is recommended that you turn it in early [window of opportunity].  Assignments not turned in on time will warrant a 10 point deduction per day up until the 3rd day.  After the 3rd day, the maximum grade allowed will be a grade of 60 depending on the quality and accuracy of completing the assignment.


     Make-up Work Individual discretion will be given per student on an “as need basis” for those needing assistance or intervention.


    Notetaking is an essential skill needed in any class. Biology is a course with a vast amount of content to learn.  Some students do not know how to take notes well.  As a result, we will use the Cornell Note-Taking Strategy (Blue or Black ink only) within class.  This strategy will give the student an organized method of taking notes so they may eventually be able to adapt them in a variety of class settings to be successful. 


    Peer Tutors/Lab Assistants:  Students who have demonstrated a deeper understanding of chemistry and have the ability to work with individuals and/or small groups may apply to become peer tutors.  They need to make themselves available during tutorials, when they can attend to help others.  High performing students can also become lab assistants and be taught by myself and then allowed to help set up chemistry labs to include gathering and organizing equipment and chemicals and practicing the labs.  Lab Assistants will help supervise the labs they prepared and receive a maximum grade as well as community service hours.







    Projects are a valuable tool when teaching concepts that extend and enrich the knowledge of what is being taught.  Students will be “responsible” for participating in this years District Level Science Fair.  This opportunity will allow students to showcase their understanding of scientific investigation thru research, experimentation and present their findings. The goal of science fair is to promote inquiry and attempt to resolve the many facets of problems plaguing our world.  Deadlines on projects will be “strictly enforced”.


    Projects are time consuming and will require a significant amount of work outside of class.  Given the volume of work, students need to plan ahead and balance the project with the other work from this class and other classes. 


    If time permits, there will be assigned outside reading /book study projects for this school year: Jurassic Park and Virus.  More information regarding the books and Science Fair will be given at a later date.


    Tutorials are held after-school from 2:10 pm – 3:00 pm. Those students who do not maintain a “B” or above will be placed on “Academic Probation” and required to attend tutorials. However, students must sign up in the morning.

              Thank you for giving your child the opportunity to attend Channelview High School.  Through our rigorous, well-designed curriculum, your child will learn biological concepts at an accelerated pace, so far ahead of their peers, enabling them to prepare for future college careers.  Take time to become familiar with the course syllabus for my class so you and your child are fully aware of the expectations and guidelines.

    During this transition, your child will spend many nights reading and reviewing materials discussed in class. This biology course involves intense memorization of important and relevant vocabulary, diagrams, processes, cascades and a variety of concepts demonstrating the cognitive skills used in science.

              It is with your parental support and my efforts to foster higher learning that your child will be successful in this biology course. Encourage your child to get plenty of rest each night and eat a well-balanced meal. At Channelview, we start very early and they cannot afford to sleep in class.
