De Zavala Elementary School will provide a safe, positive environment for students to grow into creative, responsible, patriotic contributing members of society.

De Zavala Elementary Counseling Program Vision:

De Zavala Elementary Students will become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, innovators, and the leaders of tomorrow, in a supportive, collaborative environment. Students will demonstrate respect for themselves and others and obtain a greater understanding and appreciation of our world.

Guidance Lessons:

A critical part of the school counseling curriculum.  These lessons cover a variety of topics at the K-5 levels.  Guidance lessons address content across the academic, career, and personal/social spectrum.  These lessons are provided in classroom settings and reach many students at once.

Small Group Counseling:

These counseling sessions are based on student needs.  They can be two to five students in size and cover topics that many students experience.  Your student will meet with one of our counselors along with other students with similar needs as theirs.  Together we'll work on that topic for four to six weeks, meeting for a short period of time each week.  If your student is invited to a small group, they will bring home a permission slip that must be signed before beginning.

Individual Counseling/Check Ins:

This form of counseling is very brief and solution focused.  The goal is to get the student in the right mindset to learn and get back to class.  That may be achieved through talk therapy, playing games, reading a book, or just taking some quiet time in one of our counselors' offices.  This is not the same as a regularly scheduled therapy appointment with a therapeutic plan.  If your student needs a therapist who will provide regularly scheduled therapy and a therapeutic plan, or counselors have a  resource list with community therapy information.
