Dr. Ryan Wheeler

  April 18, 2023-  Channelview Independent School District is pleased to announce that Dr. Ryan Wheeler has been selected as the new Executive Director of Special  Services.

He is coming from Houston ISD where he most recently served as Senior Manager for the nearly 50 high schools and 5,000 students with disabilities across the district as well as Transition services. He is passionate about inclusion, post-secondary transition, and restorative practices.

He began his career as a behavior teacher before moving into administration. He has served as an assistant principal, special education director and senior manager with experience in very large and very small school districts in Texas and Missouri. He previously served on the board of directors for the New Caney Education Foundation and the Pulaski County Sheltered Workshop.

“I am excited to join the team at Channelview ISD because this district is making the right commitment to students and the community,” said Dr. Wheeler.  “Students receiving special education services are general education students first and I am committed to building a culture of equity, trust, and an inclusive mindset into the fabric of our schools.”

He is a graduate of California State University with a bachelor’s degree in History and the University of Phoenix with a master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction. In December 2022, he defended his dissertation on post-secondary transition services to earn a doctorate degree from the University of Houston.
The Channelview ISD Board of Trustees approved him as the new Executive Director of Special Services during the April 18 regular board meeting. He will begin his new role May 8.
