Channelview ISD Earns National Recognition with Gold Status in the 2024 Turnip the Beet Award
September 10, 2025 - Channelview ISD is proud to announce that it is one of only 86 districts nationwide to earn Gold Status in the 2024 Turnip the Beet Award, an honor received on behalf of the district by Vanessa Garza, Coordinator of CISD Nutrition.
The award, presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), highlights sponsors who go above and beyond in providing high-quality, nutritious, and appealing meals to children during the summer months.
“We are incredibly proud of Vanessa Garza and our Nutrition Services Department for earning this national honor,” said CISD Superintendent Dr. Tory C. Hill. Their work not only meets a critical need during the summer months but also ensures that every child in Channelview ISD has the nourishment they need to thrive.”
The Turnip the Beet Award program was created to spotlight sponsors who deliver meals that are not only nutritious but also appetizing and engaging for children. For summer 2024, FNS recognized 199 winners nationwide, including 86 Gold, 91 Silver, and 22 Bronze recipients.
“Summer meals are essential for many students whose access to nutritious meals may be limited outside of the school year,” said Tanya Edwards, Channelview ISD Director of Nutrition. “This recognition reflects our team’s commitment to ensuring children in Channelview have access to healthy meals that support their growth, development, and readiness to learn when they return to school.”
Channelview ISD’s Nutrition Services team is honored to be counted among the Gold-level winners, reaffirming its dedication to student health, wellness, and success.
