CHANNELVIEW, TX, Oct. 30, 2025 — Channelview Independent School District has been named the recipient of the prestigious Region 4 Dr. Rod Paige School Safety Award, marking the first time the district has earned this honor.
The Region 4 Dr. Rod Paige School Safety Award recognizes outstanding individuals or teams who have made exceptional contributions to school safety and security. Named in honor of Dr. Rod Paige, a respected educator and advocate for safe learning environments, the award celebrates exemplary leadership, commitment, and innovation in fostering safe school communities.
Channelview ISD was recognized for implementing new and proactive safety procedures that strengthen preparedness and promote collaboration among staff, students, and families. In particular, the district developed a comprehensive safety plan that guided staff during student-led demonstrations. This plan ensured student voices could be heard while maintaining order and prioritizing the safety of all involved. Clear staff communication, timely updates to parents, and adherence to established safety protocols were key elements of this effort.

Recognizing the importance of proactive safety measures, Channelview ISD created the position of Director of Safety and Security, appointing Cynthia Benitez to lead the district’s efforts in ensuring safe and secure learning environments across all campuses. Since stepping into the role, Benitez has worked diligently to improve district-wide safety protocols, ensuring that every campus is prepared for a range of scenarios. Her efforts have included refining emergency response procedures, coordinating safety training for staff, and fostering partnerships with local law enforcement and first responders. Her dedication has set a new standard for safety excellence across the district.
The district’s recognition highlights Channelview ISD’s ongoing focus on continuous improvement and intentional excellence in all areas of school operations, including safety, communication, and community engagement.
