October 22, 2026 — Channelview Independent School District is proud to announce that it has received two distinguished recognitions from Region 4 Education Service Center for its commitment to maintaining safe and secure learning environments for students and staff.
Channelview ISD made history as the first school district in Texas to receive the Region 4 Active Shooter Preparedness Award, recognizing the district's comprehensive approach to emergency preparedness, crisis response, and school safety.
As part of the recognition process, Channelview ISD participated in an intensive two-day emergency preparedness exercise that progressed from tabletop discussions to a functional exercise. The training simulated a critical incident, allowing district personnel to practice essential emergency response procedures, including sheltering, evacuation, and ultimately, student reunification with families.
The exercises provided an opportunity for district leaders, emergency responders, and staff to evaluate their preparedness, strengthen coordination, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
"Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our students and staff," said Channelview ISD Superintendent Dr. Tory C. Hill. "Being the first district in Texas to receive this recognition is an incredible honor, but what makes me most proud is the dedication of our team.”
In addition to this historic achievement, Channelview ISD also received the Region 4 School Safety and Security Recognition, a separate honor recognizing the district's ongoing commitment to creating and maintaining a safe and secure educational environment.
This recognition followed a comprehensive safety and security audit designed to evaluate the district's existing practices, identify strengths, and provide recommendations for continued improvement.
"School safety is not a one-time initiative. It is an ongoing responsibility that requires careful planning, training, and evaluation," said Mr. Robert Laird, Assistant Superintendent of Operations. "These two recognitions reflect the intentional work taking place throughout our district to strengthen emergency preparedness."
Together, these two awards highlight Channelview ISD's continued investment in emergency preparedness, proactive safety measures, and a culture of continuous improvement.
